In Indonesia, severe flooding hit capital Jakarta, killing at least nine people, displacing thousands and forcing the closure of a domestic airport. Tens of thousands of New Year's revellers in Jakarta were soaked by torrential rains as they waited for New Year's Eve fireworks. A National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman said that monsoon rains and rising rivers submerged at least 90 neighbourhoods, forcing authorities to cut off electricity and water supplies and paralysing transport networks in the affected localities.

Director-General of Civil Aviation said the floods also submerged the runway at Jakarta's Halim Perdanakusumah domestic airport, prompting authorities to close it.
