Update Bangabandhu T20 Cup: Mushfiqur picked by Dhaka, Shakib goes to Khulna

In what came as a surprise to many, Mushfiqur Rahim was picked ahead of Shakib Al Hasan during the Bangabandhu T20 Cup players draft held on Thursday (November 12). Beximco Dhaka, who had the first pick, opted for the wicketkeeper-batsman while Shakib was snapped up by Gemcon Khulna who had the second pick.

Fortune Barishal got hold of Tamim Iqbal in the first round while Gazi Group Chattogram bagged Mustafizur Rahman. Minister Rajshahi opted for all-rounder Saifuddin, from Grade B, as their first pick while the rest of the players chosen in the first round all belonged to Grade A.

A total of 157 cricketers were part of the draft list, having passed a fitness test earlier. The players were divided into four categories. There were five Players in Grade A - who will earn BDT 15 Lakh - while cricketers in Grade B, C, and D will receive BDT 10 Lakh, BDT 6 Lakh and BDT 4 Lakh respectively.

Beximco Dhaka's decision to not opt for Shakib might have to do with what happened in the Bangladesh Premier League. Shakib, who was part of Dhaka Dynamites - which is also owned by Beximco - left the team and signed up to play for the Rangpur Riders in the BPL. According to some franchises, the rift over getting Shakib to play for their team forced the BPL to be postponed.

Shakib, is all set to return to competitive cricket after serving a one-year ban by ICC for failing to report a corrupt approach.

Meanwhile, Mahmudullah, who was expected to be picked in the first round, was instead chosen in the second with Gemcon Khulna bagging his services. The T20 captain is currently in isolation, having been tested positive for COVID-19 which forced him to miss the PSL playoffs.

Former ODI skipper Mashrafe Bin Mortaza was not part of the draft list as he sustained an injury. The board, however, has made a provision that he can be bought outside the draft and will be eligible to play if he manages to get fit at some point during the tournament.

The T20 tournament will be the second competition to be conducted by the BCB in the Covid environment. A three-team 50-over competition was recently held, with cricketers and members of the team management placed in a bio-bubble. The BCB, meanwhile, was not convinced about hosting the remaining part of Dhaka Premier League - the country's traditional 50-over tournament involving clubs from Dhaka, which is considered to be a major source of income for the majority of cricketers in Bangladesh.

The DPL came to an abrupt halt in March after completion of the first round of the tournament. The players involved in it were hoping for some sort of a road map to resume cricket and the upcoming domestic T20 tournament is a step in that direction taken by the BCB.
