COVID-19: Italy reports 793 single-day fatalities; global death toll surpasses 13,000

Italy has recorded 793 new deaths and 6,557 new cases in one single day from coronavirus taking country's toll to 4,825. With such a huge figure, 38.3 per cent of the people who have died after getting infected with COVID-19 are from Italy. Globally, over 3,07,625 COVID-19 cases have been reported till date with 13,050 deaths.

Despite extensive measures to prevent the disease from spreading, Italy remains the worst affected country in Europe. The number of confirmed COVID-19 infections rose by 6,557 to 53,578, reported ITV news on Saturday. The total number of fatalities in the northern Lombardy regions around Milan surpassed 3,000. Northern Italy has been the hardest hit by the coronavirus outbreak. It accounts for nearly two-thirds of Italy's fatalities.

France reports over 1,800 new COVID-19 cases in last 24 hours

In a sudden coronavirus case surge, France has reported 1,847 new cases of COVID-19 over the past 24 hours. With this, the total count of cases rose to 14,459, the French Health Ministry said on Saturday. Meanwhile, the death toll in the country jumped to 562 with a total 112 coronavirus deaths in a single day.

"As for this Saturday, March 21, there are 14,459 confirmed cases ... [A total of] 562 people died [from the virus] in hospitals," the statement read.

India reports another fatality as COVID-19 patient dies in Mumbai

India on Sunday reported yet another fatality due to novel coronavirus after a 63-year-old COVID-19 patient died at a hospital in Mumbai. According to the details, the patient had succumbed late last night, while receiving treatment for coronavirus illness. The deceased had tested positive for coronavirus and had a chronic history of diabetes, high blood pressure and ischemic heart disease, Public Health Department, Mumbai confirmed. The death was reported from Kasturba Hospital in Mumbai.

With this, death toll due to novel coronavirus touched two in Maharashtra. Meanwhile, the total number of coronavirus positive patients in Maharashtra has risen to 74 with 10 more positive cases reported in the last 24 hours, officials said.

Karnataka man with foreign travel history tests COVID-19 positive, taking total in state to 20

A man with recent foreign travel history has tested positive for Coronavirus in Karnataka on Sunday, taking the total tally of positive cases in the state to 20. The 33-year-old had returned from Australia, Dubai and Muscat to Dharwad. The authorities are tracing down people with whom the man had come in contact.

"The person had arrived in Dharwad on March 12 and was admitted to a private hospital on March 18 as he was found to be having Covid-19 symptoms. His throat swab was collected on the same day and sent to VDRL laboratory in Shivamogga," Dharwad deputy commissioner Deepa Cholan said.

"The person is a 33-year-old resident of Hosa Yellapur area in Dharwad. Following the positive report, we have declared Hosa Yellapur as containment area and public entry and exit are banned in a radius of 3km in the area. The person is admitted in KIMS Hubballi. Contact tracing is on as per norms," She further said.

Railways - lifeline of India - suspends services till March 31 amid coronavirus outbreak

India has suspended all train services till March 31 amid coronavirus outbreak as confirmed cases in the country have surged to 324 while 6 fatalities have been reported till date. In the nation-wide train services shut down, no passenger train will be put to service till March. Apart from this, 400 other mail/express trains, that are currently running won't commence for any new journey after reaching to destinations. Moreover, major railway stations with mass gatherings of passengers will be evacuated. According to sources, a meeting of railway officials will be held on March 25 to decide whether the suspension of train services will be extended or not.

Coronavirus crisis: Delhi to go into lockdown from 6 AM tomorrow; public transport suspended

The National Capital of Delhi will go into lockdown from 6 am tomorrow, which will last till March 31, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced on Sunday. Kejriwal announced the suspension of public transport services, including buses, metro, taxi and auto-rickshaw services. "Only 25 per cent of the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) buses will ply on roads," he said during a press conference. The Delhi CM was seen with Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal in the digital press conference while making the announcement.

Kolkata on lockdown: West Bengal capital to shut down till March 27 amid COVID-19 threat

Most of the major cities in West Bengal, including Kolkata will remain on lockdown till March 27 as an initiative taken by the state government to counter the growing threat of coronavirus. The lockdown will begin at 5:00 pm on Monday and last till 12:00 midnight on March 27.

During this period, all government and private organisations will remain shut. Services of buses, taxis will also be suspended.

India prepares for lockdown as coronavirus cases rise to 391, death toll to 7

India reported three more coronavirus deaths on Sunday, including the first casualties from Bihar and Gujarat, taking the toll to seven and the number of COVID-19 cases rose to 391, officials said, as authorities suspended all train passenger and inter-state bus services till March 31 in unprecedented steps to contain the spread of the infection.

A 38-year-old man with a kidney ailment and recent travel history to Qatar died at AIIMS-Patna and a 67-year-old man died at a hospital in Surat in Gujarat, state officials said, but the Union Health Ministry was yet to confirm the deaths. Another death was reported from Mumbai of a 63-year-old man.

People show gratitude to those involved in fight against COVID 19

People in the national capital came out in large numbers to express their gratitude at 5 PM today for those working round the clock to keep the nation's health on Prime Minister's appeal. They expressed their gratitude by standing in the balconies and at the doors of their houses and clapped and rang bells for five minutes as a show of appreciation.

The air reverberated with a medley of sounds this evening as people across the country rang bells, blew conches and clapped to express appreciation for medical and other staff who are on the frontline of the battle against coronavirus. From children to the elderly, common people to VIPs, all came out in balconies, lawns and terrace of their homes as the clock struck five.
