Spain coronavirus death toll overtakes China, 738 fatalities recorded in 24 hours

Spain has today overtaken China to record the world's second-highest death toll from coronavirus. Spanish officials reported 738 new deaths today, the country's biggest daily jump so far, taking the total from 2,696 to 3,434. The spiralling number of deaths came as Spain entered the 11th day of an unprecedented lockdown to try and rein in the COVID-19 epidemic that has now infected 47,610 people, the health ministry said. Italy has the highest death toll in the world at 6,820, according to figures from Johns Hopkins University.

Reportedly, a top Spanish health official said that he expects the number of Covid-19 cases to continue increasing in the coming days, despite having said earlier this week that he expected infections to peak soon. The total number of positive cases spiked to 421,792 across the world on Wednesday. While Italy has reported the maximum number of deaths at 6,820. In Iran, 1,934 have died, 1,100 in France and 422 in the United Kingdom. Meanwhile, Netherlands has seen 276 deaths and 192 people have died in New York.


COVID-19 in Maharashtra: 15 new positive cases of coronavirus reported, total rises to 122

The number of coronavirus cases increased to 122 in Maharashtra on Wednesday, registering an increase of 15, while two COVID-19 patients were declared as cured of the deadly infection. On Tuesday, the number of patients was 107.

Of the 15 new cases, 11 persons had come in contact with COVID-19 patients who had returned from abroad, while other four had overseas travel history themselves, said a state health department official.

Goa reports first 3 coronavirus positive cases

Goa has reported its first three positive cases of coronavirus. According to the officials of the health department, the three COVID-19 infected persons have a travel history from abroad. This is the first time the tourist state has reported coronavirus positive cases. The Directorate of Health Services, in a late-night press statement, said three suspected cases of COVID-19 from Goa, whose test results were awaited, have turned out positive. All three are male patients of ages 25, 29 and 55 years. They have travel history of returning to Goa from Spain, Australia and the USA, respectively, the officials said. The condition of the trio, admitted in Goa Medical College and Hospital, is stable, the officials added.

Commenting on the development, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said the three patients who tested positive for COVID-19 have been shifted to the designated coronavirus hospital in Goa and health authorities in the state are in the process of quarantining the persons they were in contact with.

Coronavirus lockdown extended in Tamil Nadu till April 14, says govt

The Tamil Nadu government on Thursday announced extending the ongoing lockdown of the state to stem the spread of coronavirus till April 14, coinciding with the 21-day national lockdown announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The lockdown, announced by Chief Minister K Palainswami on Monday as part of the government''s measures to tackle COVID-19, was originally scheduled to be in force till March 31, 2020.

"The lockdown and related orders announced till March 31 are being extended till April 14," an official release here said.The decision was taken at a review meeting chaired by the Chief Minister with various department heads and district collectors to discuss the steps taken to tackle the spread of the virus, it said.

The ban on international flights has been extended to April 14 amid the coronavirus outbreak across the country. The civil aviation ministry said on Thursday that a seven-day ban on operations of international flights, imposed last week, would now go on till April 14, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said. Domestic flights have also been asked to suspend operations till March 31.

"It has been decided that scheduled international commercial passenger services shall remain closed till 18:30 hrs (GMT) of April 14, 2020. This will not apply to approved international all-cargo operations and flights," said the DGCA.

The country has surpassed China to become the nation with most COVID-19 cases in the world, according to the CSSE.

The nationwide tally grew over 10,000 cases in less than five hours. The state of New York has become the epicentre of the country's outbreak with 37,802 cases reported. New Jersey and California have reported 6,876 and 3,802 cases, respectively, Xinhua reported citing the CSSE.Total COVID-19-linked deaths in the US reached 1,178, while 281 of them occurred in New York City and 100 in Kings County of Washington state.
