Afghanistan have named HD Ackerman, the former South Africa cricketer, as their batting coach. His first assignment will be the three-match T20I series against Ireland in March.

Afghanistan is currently coached by Lance Klusener, Ackerman's former teammate for South Africa. Klusener was appointed to the role in September after Afghanistan's disastrous campaign at the World Cup, where they failed to win a single game.

Ackerman, a dominating top-order batsman in his times, played four Tests for South Africa in 1998. The 46-year-old averages 43.85 as a first-class cricketer, with 14,625 runs and 40 hundreds, and currently plies his trade in television broadcasting as a commentator.
