India fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah will receive the Polly Umrigar award for his exceptional performances in the 2018-19 season, the board revealed the morning before the scheduled BCCI awards on January 12. While Bumrah becomes a first-time recipient of the top honours in men's cricket snapping Virat Kohli's back-to-back triumphs in 16-17 and 17-18, legspinner Poonam Yadav will bag the women's equivalent of the award for her consistent performances in the aforementioned cricket calendar.

Bumrah has enjoyed a prolific run of form since becoming an all-format regular at the start of 2018. He made his Test debut at Newlands, Cape Town and has gone on to claim 62 wickets from 12 Tests at an average of 19.24. Still in the nascent stages of his Test career, the 26-year-old has already claimed fifers in Johannesburg, Nottingham, Melbourne, Antigua and Jamaica and has been a central figure in India's Test series wins in Australia and West Indies.
